Photograph - Copy: Portrait of 'smiling' Abraham Lincoln

1860 (Date manufactured/created)
Paper
The famous portrait of a smiling Abraham Lincoln was painted by Alban Jasper Conant from life a few weeks before Lincoln's first election of November 1860. The circumstances of the sitting, and Mrs. Lincoln's praise of the image, are very well described in the artist's statement shown at flic.kr/p/Rb6X6H.
This image is a later (likely retouched) photograph of the painted portrait, copyrighted by Conant's daughter Carrie Conant Smith on 3/26/1911, a few years before her father died (2/5/1915). Several of these photos with Conant's statement included apparently were produced at the time.
