"Arcade" Treadle Sewing Machine

sewing machine, collected from the East River Reading Room prior to its sale in 2017. Arcade treadle machine in fine, brown maple cabinet. Opening lid pulls sewing macine into place. Includes warranty card, instruction and accessory parts including pin cushion with pins.
'Arcade' brand self-stowing treadle operated sewing machine in a maple cabinet with oak scroll-work. This machine came from the East River Reading Room, where it was used by the Sunshine Society to make quilts, bandages during WWI and WWII, and clothes for the indigent through the 1940's. In 1874, the East River Reading Room on the Boston Post Road in Madison, CT opened and served as a town library and meeting place. It was supplanted by the Scranton Memorial Library in 1901. In 1914 a sewing group called the Sunshine Society of East River met on Fridays to make clothing and toys for underprivileged children, using treadle sewing machines still in the room.
