Silk, Baptiste, Wire
A taupe-brown silk bonnet, characteristic of Quaker style, with simple, mono-color designs and a masterful display of technique. The bonnet has a straight, moderately wide brim with rounded cheek-tabs shaped with wire. It also has a low, gathered crown at the back of the head. A tightly gathered skirt extends from the crown, with two decorative horizontal pleats. The seam-line is hidden with a sash and bow, the edges bound with matching silk - a popular decorative method in 1860-1880. The bonnet has long, color matched taffeta ribbons that would tie below the chin. The body is lined with white silk and the skirt is lined with a double layer of stiff hexagonal netting.
