Costume, Dress - Wedding Dress with Tabbed Train

1881 – 1883 (Date manufactured/created)
1880s (Date manufactured/created)
Silk, Satin, Lace
A wedding dress, evocative of colonial styles with elbow-length sleeves and open-fronted skirt. It is of white satin, lined with white cotton, and accented with two varieties of floral lace.  This dress dates to the first years of the 1880s, and bears the trademarks of the time; the gown has a steeply pointed waistline, tabbed and ruffled hem, and construction techniques, notably its princess seams. A similar example can be seen in this fashion plate from the MET Digital Library. The bodice is flatlined with light cotton twill, structured with four front darts that give the fashionable appearance of a curved belly. It is unboned. The bodice buttons up the front with sixteen crochet-covered buttons. The chest is padded. The neckline is a unique triangular shape, featuring a standing collar shaped with wire. The neckline, collar, and pointed hem are piped. The skirt boasts an enormous train, the entire hem piped and tabbed over a layered frill and pleated ruffle backed with tarlatan. It is unlined. The skirt is open in the middle, featuring a tiered insertion panel of lace. below this is a small triple hem ruffle. The back of the skirt achieves fullness with five box pleats. Condition; Very good, badly stained in spots. L 49" ( center front )
