Costume, Dress - Pink and White Stripe

1866 – 1868 (Date manufactured/created)
1860s
Silk Taffeta

A gown in pink and white stripe silk. In many places the silk has weakened and its stripes faded. The silk has also torn, most heavily disintegrated at the shoulder and underarm. Damage has been mitigated in places shielded from sunlight, where the stripes’ original color, a vibrant bubblegum pink, remains. The diagonal stripes are composed of horizontal strips of pink silk alternating with a small diamond pattern in bands.

The gown is short-waisted and long-sleeved, buttoning with six thread-covered buttons at the center front, each ornamented with a four-pointed star. The sleeves are piped at the armscye and end in a two-tiered slit, trimmed with a strip of silk and white netting. The waist is shaped by an applied belt and the front panels by four boned darts. The side seams are similarly boned with black spring steel. Two faux seams curve across the back. The high neckline is bound with a narrow strip of silk. The bodice is fully lined with white cotton.

The seven-paneled skirt, longer in the back, is pieced with small gores at the hem for shaping. It is hemmed with tape and fully lined with polished cotton. It is full-skirted in the back by way of cartridge pleating. A large pocket is situated at the left front.

Interestingly, the majority of this garment is sewn using machine chain stitching, save for detail work.
