Costume, Beachwear - Striped Bathing Suit

1890 – 1910 (Date manufactured/created)
Wool
Bathing costumes of the 1890s and early 1900s did not show skin. Suits like this one intended for women had short knickerbockers covered by a skirt of equal length, akin to other feminine sporting attire of the age. Stockings and bathing shoes could be worn to complete the ensemble. A.) and C.) are exactly the same.
A.) and C.)   The bathing suit's base consists of a bodice and knickerbockers separated by a waistband, decorated with four lines of white tape. The bodice has a sailor collar, a front closure of 5 black buttons in a placket, lightly gathered short sleeves, and a yoke lined with white cotton defined by a tape integrated in the seam. The bodice and knickerbockers have four linear pleats mirrored at front and back. A button is placed at both sides of the waistband, and two buttons are placed in line at the center back of the waistband tot attach to the skirt. Waist 24", L: 39" center back.
B.) A matching skirt has same white banding, with three around the waistband and four at the hem. The skirt waistband has two buttonholes at either side of center back. This attaches to the corresponding buttons on the suit. The waistband is lined so the buttonholes at the sides are internal, and appear to be seamless when worn. The skirt is box pleated to the waistband.  L: 25".
