In the mid-19th Century, Wilton led the American shoemaking industry, with a reported 155 local shoemakers throughout the town. By 1865, the advent of shoemaking machinery had driven many of the town's shoemakers out of business. Shoe lasts like these were used to retain the shape of the shoe in manufacture and repair.
