Wilton has both a volunteer fire department which was established in 1928 and a professional department that was created in 1971. On September 11, 2001, six Wilton firefighters - Brad Carlson, David Chaloux, Kevin Czarnecki, Mike Michelsen, Jason Mumbach and Matthew Mumbach - raced to the World Trade Center to assist local responders at the site.
