Raggedy Ann was the creation of American illustrator Johnny Gruelle. Raggedy Ann was inspired by the poem "The Raggedy Man", written by Gruelle's friend James Whitcomb Riley, and by a homemade doll found in Gruelle's parents' attic. In 1915, Gruelle patented the name and design of the doll, and by 1918 published the first book based on the character, Raggedy Ann Stories. The release of the book was accompanied by Raggedy Ann dolls.

Gruelle moved to the Silvermine section of Wilton in 1912, and maintained a home their for over two decades.
