On April 20th, 1779, Wilton resident Salmon Hubbell was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 8th Connecticut Regiment during the Revolutionary War. This commission was signed by future first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court John Jay, who was serving as the President of the Second Continental Congress at the time. Hubbell served at both the Battle of Germantown and the Battle of Monmouth. He survived the war and returned to his farm in Wilton.
