Boats delivered newspapers to Southport because trains could not get through. Five feet of snow reportedly fell, but winds created drifts of 15 to 20 feet. John Henry Beach noted in his diary on Wednesday, March 14th, 'commence digging out. Turned out with 18 men to open the road got down as far as Sam. Beach ['s house] and gave up."
