Sign - C.E.. Scranton/Sackett Bros. Livery Stable

1880s
Double sided large placard trade sign made of wood and in the shape of an oval. Both sides are painted black with a similar design - painted, all-caps text along the top and bottom and a picture of a horse's head in a circle at the center of the sign. On either side of the circle at the center of both sides of the sign is a somewhat intricate design in the same color as the rest of the text. One side advertises Sackett Bros. Livery Stable in white text, with the horses's head in a white circle. At the bottom of this side in small text is "W.R. Coe. Prov. R.I." The other side advertises C.E. Scranton Livery Stable (Charles Ellsworth Scranton, Postmaster 1885-7) in gold text, with the horse's head in front of a blue sky with some white clouds. Metal along the outer edge except at the top. Some paint has worn off. Mr Scranton had his business on Wall St.  57 1/2" x 33 1/4".
Donor states, "My father was Lewis Scranton, antique dealer from Killingworth. He died last year. He expressed to my sister and me his desire to donate his C.E. Scranton Livery sign to the Madison Historical Society. From some of the research Charlotte L Evarts Memorial Archives provided to him, it appears C.E. Scranton opened his livery in Madison in 1887 and also had a lumber business."
