Oil on canvas. In the fall of 1946, Stevan Dohanos invited five students from the 40-member Staples High School Band, led by John Ohanian, the Westport Schools director of music, to be models for the marching band musicians in the painting he was creating as a cover for "The Saturday Evening Post." The artist posed the Staples musicians in his Westport studio, paying each teenager a stipend of $30 to sit still for a half-hour as if they were playing their brass instruments. The models are, from upper left to lower right: Ed “Junior” Capasse ‘48; Robert “Bob” Nash ‘48; Evelyn “Binky” Bennett ‘47; Steve “Shrivie” Sefsik ‘48; Robert “Cue-Ball” Barker ‘48.
