Nutmegs were imported from Indonesia and Grenada and sold throughout the country, often by “Yankee” peddlers – that's how Connecticut came to be known as the Nutmeg State. This grater, patented in 1870, worked by inserting a nutmeg into the compartment, and turning the crank, which is connected to a sharp disc inside.
