Signature Quilt: Pieced, hand-sewn, hand-quilted ; printed cotton fabric; nine squares in each full block, with blocks on point, so they appear as diamond-shaped. Blocks are separated from one another by 2 1/2” wide sashing in a yellow print, intersected by 2 1/2” squares of blue-green print. Three inch wide sashing in same yellow print forms border around entire quilt, with a blue print binding. Cotton batting between top and reverse of quilt. Numbering of Blocks: The quilt consists of nine horizontal rows of blocks. The curator has numbered the blocks beginning at the top left of the quilt (facing,) working from left to right, from the top row of blocks row by row through the bottom row of blocks. (See the hard-copy grid, which shows the layout of the quilt with the numbered blocks.) Also see file for further description of each block. Writing in blocks -- Appears to have been hand-written in ink in several of the quilted blocks. Some of the writing is illegible. Follow is the list of names that appear. (See file for definitive listing of specific blocks.) Mariett Gregory.cousin; Anna M. Sommers, Mrs. Lucinda Silliman; “Emma”; Marietta Gregory, Elizabeth F. Bradley; Lucinda Silliman; Grandma Bur; Jane Ann Burr: Florence Ophelia “Bradley” Clarrissa Squire; Emila Cla... Sillima(n); Amelia J. Bradley; Amelia Bradley; Sarah A. Burr; Lavinia A. Willson; Alice A. Bartram; Anna M. Bartram; Emma M. Burr; March 22. Age 9 years/ 1855 Reverse of quilt: Backing fabric of glazed (?) cotton is in four vertical sections. From left to right, Sections 1, 3 and 4 is a double-striped brown on white on white cotton. Section 2 . is a single brown stripe on white cotton. On the lower half of Section 2, it appears that the original maker repaired a hole in the fabric before quilting. On Section 4, it looks as though two pieces of fabric were sewn together to create the column.
