Offset print, hand colored with with ink wash and crayon, on paper. This hand-colored print depicts a group of children from a Freedom School, set up across Mississippi during the summer of 1964 to counter the inequitable education provided to African-American children. Living most of his life in Westport, Tracy Sugarman participated as an artist-reporter in the Freedom Summer project, and documented his experience through evocative sketches and photographs. This sketch was perhaps printed as a holiday card for Sugarman's personal use.
