Dearth came to Waterbury at age 15. He worked for a time at the Waterbury Clock Company but left to devote himself to painting. He travelled to Paris to study at the Ecole de Beaux Arts where he was influenced by the "glare aesthetic" of Bastien Lepage, and studied with Horace Johnson. Dearth collected early European, near Eastern and Oriental art, which he incorporated into his paintings.
