19th Century Staffordshire decorative plate with scene on front depicting Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad plate was one of many "American Views" produced by Enoch Wood and Sons. The view shows an engine similar to that designed by George Stephenson in 1825. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was built to transport freight and transport over the Allegheny Mountains. Haines Halsey suggests this print was produced to commemorate the laying of the first rail of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad on 4 July 1828 and was produced prior to the event or at that time. Enoch Wood was among the first Staffordshire potters to develop the healthy export trade with the US. Enoch Wood & Sons produced their quality transfer printed earthenwares out of Burslem from 1818 to 1846.
