Scene front depicts the landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York. 19th Century Staffordshire Plate. English transferware. Marked "Clews Warranted Staffordshire" with crown on rear. James and Ralph Clews rented the Cobridge Works in Cobridge, Staffordshire from William Adams in 1815. The brothers specialized in high quality blue transfer printed wares during their partnership, which ended in 1834. The favorite among Clews patterns exported to America is The Landing of Lafayette at Castle Garden, commemorating the general's return to the US in 1824.
