The Washington Map was an adaptation of a map published in England in 1783, featuring the eastern third of America and Canada surrounded by figures of Fame (holding the trumpet and the laurel wreath), Washington Securing Liberty (the goddess with the Liberty Cap) to America, and the goddesses Wisdom and Justice dictating to Dr. Franklin at the right, as he writes “American Independence, 4 July 1776” in a book.  The map shows the new northern boundaries of the United States, which were negotiated in 1782 at the Treaty of Paris ending the Revolutionary War.

On the reverse, The Glebe Poem in a cartouche of patriotic symbols including the liberty cap, a popular symbol of the Sons of Liberty, commemorates Washington’s victories in an agricultural allegory.  The poem also memorializes General Warren, who died at Bunker Hill and General Montgomery who died in the battle for Quebec in the Revolutionary War.
