To elevate this marking sampler, Julia Hurlburt added a rainbow of threads and a vine-and-leaf border surrounding her work. She also showcased her stitching abilities by utilizing several fonts and a unique bubble-like stitch in the second and third lines. Julia was born to Solomon Hurlbut and Hepzibah Way in Woodbury, Connecticut. She married Henry Isbell of Pennsylvania, a carpenter, in 1841. By 1870, Julia and Henry had moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, where Henry became a shoe salesman. After Henry died in 1887, Julia returned to Woodbury.
