Candee was a landscape painter influenced by both luminish and tonalism. A native of New Haven, CT, he may have studied with Nathaniel Jocelyn and George Durrie, also New Haven artists. Like many other artists of hte 19th C, Candee studied in Europe. He and Geroge Inness shared a room together in Rome in the early 1870s. Prior to his studies in Europe, Candee traveled through Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, creating landscape sketches withc were later used to develop finished oil paintings in his New Haven studio.
