A 2nd generation member of hte Hudson River School (HRS), Colman developed his technique under the instruction of Asher B Burand, who instilled within Colman an appreciation for the natural beauty of the American landscape. His poetic depictions established his reputation as one of the leading figures of hte 2nd generation of the HRS of painters. This piece with its dramatic use of light was probably a preparatory study for a larger work. Cloud-filled sunset sky over a range of mountains looking across river with horizon running horizontal. Trees and rocky outcropping in foreground. Two figures sit near shore. Sailboat (3 sails) with figure on end.
