Head and neck of old horse profile facing left; dappled grey with yellow and red bridle. French artist Thomas Couture was an important teacher as well as painter of grand historical subjects such as "Romans of the Decadence" (1847), He encouraged his students to paint from nature and to look for new subjects in the scenes of daily life, leading an alternative movement opposing the restrictive polocies of hte French Royal Academy.
