Venetian Canal

circa 1880 (Date manufactured/created)
Oil
wood, painting
Venetian canal scene with buildings mid-ground left and background right; canal waterway foreground center into background center; arch bridge crosses canal background-center. Front of double-sided painting (99.25.41B). Sargent painted scenes of Venice many times throughout his life. He made regular visits to Venice and appears to have painted the city during every visit.  This painting reflects the training Sargent received from Carolus-Duran, who encouraged his students to paint ‘au premier coup’, to quickly place each brushstroke without needing to rework them.  The donor says this shows the view outside the window of Sargent’s studio in Venice.
