wood, painting
Shades of pink and orange dominate view of courtyard buildings just after a rain. Buildings in mid- and back-ground left, center and right; courtyard foreground center with fountain at right. Reverse of a double-sided painting (99.25.41A).  Sargent painted scenes of Venice many times throughout his life.  He made regular visits to Venice and appears to have painted the city during every visit.  This painting reflects the training Sargent received from Carolus-Duran, who encouraged his students to paint ‘au premier coup’, to quickly place each brushstroke without needing to rework them.  The donor says this shows the view outside the window of Sargent’s studio in Venice.
