Joel Randolph Anderson trained with Minnie Rogers Steele in Waterbury and at the Art Students' League with George Bridgman, He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Library of Congress, the Academy of Allied Arts, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, and the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts. He also worked as a commercial artist in Waterbury.
