A Waterbury native, Kainen retired as Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Smithsonian Inst. in 1969. He was associated with the New York Group in the 1930s, which included Stuart Davis and Alice Neel. His later work focuses on gestural abstractions floating in evocative fields of color.
