Signed "GE Candee" and dated lower right. Candee had an affinity for the area surrounding Waterbury and the Naugatuck River and painted and sketched in the area often. This painting is th earliest known identified Connecticut view, adn the earliest painting which has an accompanying preliminary sketch. The sketch for this painting is held by the CT Historical Scoiety in Hartford. Candee was a portrait and landscape painter. He worked both in oil and watercolor. He was born in New Haven, CT and studied there briefly under Joseph Kyle. He worked in New Haven as late as 1879.
