This sampler was created by Julia Beecher, aged 11. Julia was the daughter of Daniel Beecher (ca. 1763-March 29,1848), who operated an inn in Naugatuck (Daniel had 4 wives and 15 children!). Julia's sister Clarissa married Charles Goodyear and her brother founded the rubber manufacturing business in Naugatuck. Julia married Gustavus Spencer (Yale class of 1835) in 1838. She died in 1843, aged 24.  She did not have any children.

Julia's sampler was worked under the tutelage of Mary Curtis Spencer, a Waterbury native. Mary C. Spencer was the first of eleven children born to Ansel Spencer (1763-1850), a revolutionary war pensioner, and his second wife, Loly Benham (1773-1860). They were married at Waterbury, February 1792. Mary was born December 20, 1792; died October 1, 1871; and is buried in Prospect, Connecticut. She married James Stent, who was also from Waterbury.
