+Young girls who went to school in the 19th century were usually given instruction in decorative accomplishments, rather than academic subjects. Samplers demonstrated a young girl’s piety, her refinement and her ability to form the letters of the alphabet, which would be useful in marking the household bedding and kitchen fabrics she would make in anticipation of her marriage.
+alphabet and bumber sampler worked on coarse linen in black, pink, pastel green, pale blue and pale brown silk, divided into two horizontal sections by black cross-stitches; top half contains alphabet in uppercase block lettering with some repeated letters; bottom half contains numbers 1-9 and 0 and inscribed "1800 / Betsy Porter age 10".
+Betsy Porter (and Sally Porter) are sisters. the are the daughters of Capt. Phinease Porter, who led a local regiment for 6 months in 1775 (to NY, Long Island, Ticonderoga, Crown Point, and Montreal); His journal is in MM/MHS archives; Catherine Cook is Betsy Porter's daughter. Betsy's husband was Zenas Cook, one of hte first clock-makers in Waterbury.
