Young girls who went to school in the 19th century were usually given instruction in decorative accomplishments, rather than academic subjects. Samplers demonstrated a young girl’s piety, her refinement and her ability to form the letters of the alphabet, which would be useful in marking the household bedding and kitchen fabrics she would make in anticipation of her marriage. Alphabet and memorial sampler inscribed "Flora Grants Sampler marked in the 11 year / of her age Mary Huntington Inst Torrington 1831"; "Religion is the chief concern Of mortal here below / May I its great importance learn Its sovreign virtues"; "In memory of / Mrs. Aurelia wife of Augustus Grant who died / May 16 1825 aged 27 Blessed are the dead that / die in the Lord yea Saith the spirrit the rest / from their labours and their works do follow them".
