This is a wonderful example of an ambrotype. Without the case, it is clear to see that the item is composed of 2 pieces of glass and that there is black paint on the reverse of the image. Ambrotypes are a negative image that creates a positive image when they are backed with black cloth or paint. Because the paint is chipping away on the back, it's creating a very haunting image.
