This is a wonderful example of an ambrotype. Without the case, it is clear to see that the item is composed of 2 pieces of glass and that there is black paint on the reverse of the image. Ambrotypes are a negative image that creates a positive image when they are backed with black cloth or paint. This ambrotype is likely a copy of an older image.
