The center figure is Martha Chase Wade (nee: Starkweather). This photograph is one of our oldest depictions of students at the Collegiate Institute for Young Ladies which was founded in 1865 in Waterbury, CT. In 1873 the school had accrued too much debt, was closed in 1874, and by 1875 it was reopened as Saint Margaret's School for Girls, a Diocesan School for Girls after its debts were paid off. Reverend Russell from St. John's Episcopal Church in Waterbury became the headmaster.
Gift of Elizabeth Wade White, 1964.
