John Compton, a successful insurance man who was Mayor of Perth Amboy, NJ from 1898 to 1899 and Emma Debow Compton were parents of five children; two of whom were girls -- Sonia and Lola. This work depicts the artist's wife, Sonia, on the right and her sister Lola at the Compton house in Perth Amboy, NJ. Lola never married and, being close with her sister, visited her often.
