Thomas Shepard (1605-1649) was an English minister who, after moving to New England, became a significant force in the Puritan Ministry, alongside such figures as Richard Mather. This book was published with text from his original manuscript by Pierce and Parker in 1832.

Our copy was given as a gift, as evidenced by the ink inscription opposite the title-page: "Forrest Shepherd A present to his nephew Forrest Ward." It was probably used by students in the Hand Academy in Madison, CT. Forrest Shepherd (1800-1888) was an American professor and geologist with ties to the mining industry. He also produced globes, and held a patent for a method of globe production. He attended Yale Divinity school briefly from 1841-2, and died in Norwich, Connecticut. We have been unable to identify his nephew, Forrest Ward.
