Jefferson, Thomas, 1743-1826. Memoir, correspondence, and miscellanies, from the papers of Thomas Jefferson. Edited by Thomas Jefferson Randolph. Volume I[-IV]. Second edition. Boston: Published by Gray and Bowen. New York: By G. & C. & H. Carvill., 1830.

Previously owned by Daniel Hand (1732-1818), this 4-volume octavo set is a second edition copy of Jefferson's memoir, as edited by his grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph. It was first published in 1829. This copy is bound in contemporary sheepskin with gilt-lettered spine labels in red and black calf. It is complete, and features a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait of Jefferson as well as a foldout facsimile of the Declaration in Vol. 1.

Provenance: Originally owned by Judge George E. Hand, and later gifted by Daniel Hand to the Hand Academy in 1890.

Each volume in this set contains the following:

1. Daniel Hand's original presentation inscription to its front pastedown in ink: "This book belonged to Judge Geo[rge] E Hand Detroit Mich And is presented to the 'Hand Academy' of Madison Conn by his brother Daniel Hand April 1890"

2. The modern (20th cent.) bookplate of the Madison Historical Society

3. The ownership signature of Judge George E. Hand in ink to the front pastedown and/or front free endpaper

4. An unidentified shelfmark in contemporary ink ("H76[-9]").

Vols. 1 and 4 have a previous ownership signature to the front free endpaper, which seems to have been later crossed out by Judge Hand; it possibly reads "Chas. Cleland[?]". There are no in-text annotations in any of the volumes.
