First edition of Grace Greenwood's Old Wonder-Eyes, a delightful collection of children's stories marketed as a holiday gift. Grace Greenwood was the pen name of Sarah Jane Lippincott (1823-1904), a popular journalist and children's writer with a long list of accomplishments, including being the first woman writer on the New York Times payroll. This copy of one of her children's books was given to a young Madison, CT girl by her father: "[To] Ella Platt A New Year's present from her father 1859". It is a nice example of Victorian gift-giving, and the budding market for children's stories in America in the 1800s.
