12mo (140 x 73mm), pp. 300. Bound in contemporary calf, spine and boards gilt. Early ink ownership inscriptions to front free flyleaf recto and verso.

Third volume only of a later edition of Jane Porter's The Scottish Chiefs, which was seminal to the development of the historical novel. Porter wrote several such novels, and is slowly being rediscovered by literary scholars today and appreciated for her contributions to the English novel. This particular copy, an American edition, has a wonderful provenance, and we are lucky to know so much about its history and previous owners. Its owners were as follows:
