From Daniel Hand's personal collection, this copy of Felicia Hemans' Songs of the Affections was purchased by him during his time in Augusta, Georgia, and later found its way into the collection of Elizabeth Skinner Platt, also a noted Madison, CT resident.

Felicia Hemans was a celebrated late-Romantic poet who would have been widely read in England and America when Daniel Hand was a young man, though she was later eclipsed in the 19th-and 20th-centuries by her male contemporaries, such as Wordsworth and Byron. Happily, this copy has survived in what is probably its original publisher's binding, complete with advertisements in the front and back for other upcoming and recently published Carey & Lea publications. Together with Hemans' text, it paints a picture of what was being read and consumed by the American public at this time.
