18mo (147 x 88mm), pp. 250. Bound in contemporary mottled sheep, spine gilt in compartments. Bookplate of MHS to upper pastedown, partially obscuring early ink inscription gifting the book to the Hand Academy "by Mr. Daniel Hand." Below is a shelf-mark ("No. 85") in a later hand. Early ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper: "Wm Barton Jnr property."

Dickinson's Compendium was "intended to be a fair exhibition of the scriptural doctrines of Christianity" for young students, and is emblematic of the kind of moral instruction that would have been taught in New England in the early-to mid-19th.cent. This particular copy was gifted by Daniel Hand to the Hand Academy. We have been unable to identify the other early owner, a William Barton Jr.
