The Churchman's Monthly Magazine ... New-Haven: (Conn.) Printed at the Herald-Office, by Oliver Steele & Co. [1808]. [Vol. 5, nos. 1-8].

8vo (200 x 133mm), pp. 436, [1], contemporary quarter black roan and block-printed paper boards with original wrappers bound-in, early ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper ("Miss Cynthia Collins 1826").

One of the first Episcopal Church periodicals, The Churchman's Monthly Magazine was first published in January 1804 in New Haven, and continued being printed in New York until the late 1800's. The purpose of the publication was, as stated in the first 1804 issue, "to furnish [its] readers with some historical accounts, comments, and explanations of the Fasts, and Feasts of the Church, of the Sacraments, Liturgy, and Offices, as may appear needful, to inform the ignorant, relieve the doubtful, and confirm the wavering. To these will be added, essays, dissertations, and select extracts, from the best writers" (Vol. I, No.I, Jan. 1804).

This copy was owned by a woman named Cynthia Collins in the 1820s, who we have been sadly unable to positively identify.
