[Seaweed Scrapbook]

1894 – 1897 (Date manufactured/created)
[Seaweed Scrapbook]. 1894-1897.

4to (196 x 152mm), approx. 300 blank pages with several inserted scraps of pressed seaweed and leaves. Bound in original quarter patterned cloth and flexible silver paper boards, with gold-and-white embossed rose on upper cover. Previously located at the Deacon Jonathon Trumbull Lee house in Madison, CT, and donated to MHS by Nancy Farnan.

The Victorians loved their mementos, and seaweed scrapbooks were a common addition to young ladies' bookshelves. A young woman would collect specimens of seaweed near their home or while on holiday (in the case, along the beaches of Madison, CT) and press them into scrapbooks to form natural keepsakes. Sadly, we do not know who owned this particular seaweed album, though one of the specimens is labeled as a "Present from Miss M. Bartlet"; female friends would often exchange samples as tokens or gifts.
