An American edition of Philip Doddridge's Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul. Doddridge (1702-1751) was an English Nonconformist minister and hymnwriter whose work was widely published and studied in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. This particular copy was owned early on by Daniel Hand during his time in Augusta, Georgia, and later presented by him to his sister. His inscription on the front free endpaper reads, "Siba Chittenden Guilford September 1822 This Book is presented as a Compliment from her Brother Daniel Hand".

Happily, we have plenty of evidence of Siba's thoughts on this book; she has written notes on the contents on the front pastedown and endpapers. She notes with zeal: "[Page]146 Commence a Hero in the Cause of Christ!!!" We also know she incorporated this volume into her daily routine; of page 176 she writes, "6 following pages every Friday before breakfast & the note at the first mentioned page".

Between Siba's enthusiastic notes and the tattered state of this book, we would say she used it lovingly and often!
