Biographical dictionaries were common in the nineteenth century, and are a valuable resource for scholars today to discern how certain historical figures have been received/perceived over time. We know that this book was up-to-date and accurate for its time because the entry for Lord Byron includes his death date, just months before the publication of this book. This edition also features a list of mythological figures (mostly Grecian and Roman) as well as a compilation of prominent living figures.

Famous figures listed in the book as still living include: John Adams; Anna Letitia Barbould ("As a writer of prose, she has surpassed almost every female"); John C. Calhoun; Thomas Jefferson ("Benevolent, humane, and affable"); and William Wordsworth, among others.
