Thomas Brown (1778-1820) was a Scottish philosopher and poet known chiefly today for his critique of Erasmus Darwin's work, and his strong commitment to scholarly thinking. It is unsurprising that this copy changed hands within the Hand family, whose members were highly educated and enthusiastic about their scholarly endeavors.

Presumably, this book was first owned by Daniel Hand, who bought it during his time in the South as a young man, as evidenced by the inscription on the front free endpaper: "Daniel Hand Augusta Geo. 1829." Then, we assume the volume was given to his brother, Judge George E. Hand, who inscribed his name on the name page along with the date 1835. We can only assume the book made its way back to Daniel after his brother's death, because it was then gifted to the Hand Academy in the late nineteenth century: "This book belonged to Judge Geo. E Hand Detroit Mich and is presented to the Hand Academy of Madison Conn by his brother Daniel Hand April 1890" (front pastedown).

We are grateful that they took the time to inscribe the book, so today we can envision its journey through many Madison hands (or "Hands", as it were!).
