A Philadelphia edition of the French Romantic thinker De Lamartine's Pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Titled Voyage en Orient in the original French, the book oozes Romantic sensibility, and describes his dramatic journey abroad. Of his journey, De Lamartine says that he "returned with the emotions of [his] heart deeply awakened, and [his] mind enlightened by sublime and awful lessons" (prefatory material). This particular copy was "Presented to the Hand Academy by Mr. Daniel Hand", as we learn from an early ink inscription to the front pastedown.
