Bookseller ticket of Durrie & Peck of New Haven to front pastedown of first vol.Erastus Scranton's personal bible has been heavily annotated, and is a remarkable record of his scholarship. The Reverend Erastus Scranton (1777-1861) attended Yale and was the first pastor of the Orange Congregational Church (when Orange was still referred to as "North Milford"), where he "was settled July 4th, 1805, and dismissed January 3d, 1827. He was a native of Madison, and was a strong, tall, farmer-looking man ... The church and society prospered under his ministrations, which were longer continued than those of any other pastor" (Vol. II, p. 344 of History of New Haven County, Connecticut. New York: W.W. Preston & Co., 1892). He donated land to the church, and wrote accounts of the history of the town. A photographic portrait of Scranton later in life can be viewed on the MHS Flickr page by clicking here.Transcription of partial genealogy on the verso of title-page:"Mr. John Scranton + Elizabeth Clarkwere married on December 19 1691.
