Ex gallico exemplari in latinum translatum, clarioribus tamen regulis exhibitum, in aliquibus emendatum, in pluribus auctum, necnon congrius additionibus locupletatum, etc. Bonomiæ [1782]. Ex Typographia S. Thomæ Aquinatis.

8vo in half sheets (207 x 141mm), pp. [4], 155, [1], with folding typographical table in front.

A wonderful example of a sewn-bookblock binding. These kinds of bindings were meant to be temporary, which makes it all the more interesting that it has survived in this state until now. Customers would buy books unbound or in temporary flimsy bindings like this in the 18th century, and go to their preferred bookbinder for a fancier, more permanent binding.

An ecclesiastical history, this book was printed in Bologna, Italy, and would have been owned by someone both religious and erudite (Erastus Scranton?). A digitized version of the British Library's copy can be viewed by clicking here.

[English trans. of title:] The chronological manual which includes the status of the Eastern Church and the West: the series of pontiffs and patriarchs: general and particular councils: ecclesiastical authors ... heresies, sects, and schisms. Translated from the French copy into Latin, yet it is displayed to the clearer rules, amended in some, enlarged in more, as well as enriched with more harmonious additions, etc.
